Analysis of the Counseling Profession - 1075 Words
Abstract This paper will discuss three facets of the counseling profession: the current state of the profession, potential threats to the profession and the future of the profession. Analysis of the Counseling Profession Current State of the Counseling Profession While the profession of counseling is a little over 100 years old it is only recently that it has come into its own in terms of parity and respect among other professionals, legislators and the public. Licensure is now available in every state lending a more unified approach and feel to the profession. There is however continued inroads to be made in unifying the counseling profession as a whole. This can be done only when the common interest of the counselingâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Iââ¬â¢ll admit it seems a little overwhelming thinking about all the possibilities for the future and all the changes I will experience as I move through my education and career. I will highlight a few significant innovative and exciting possibilities. The first is neuroscience. ââ¬Å"Counseling changes the brain. The major conceptual, theoretical and practical breakthrough will be the recognition and incorporation of neuroscience into our couns eling practice and research.â⬠(Ivey, A.E., 2012) Instead of practicing from a problem focused approach the move to a strength based approach can build new neural networks and reinforce positive emotions. ââ¬Å"Neuroscience leads us more to a positive, preventative approachâ⬠(Ivey, A.E. 2012) Technology has the ability to impact the counseling profession in a variety of ways. Technology has transformed our planet into a global village. With that in mind it will be important to be culturally competent and be aware of disparities in power and privilege that exist between and among peoples. It appears that the social justice movement in the counseling profession will become increasingly international in focus. Barbara Herlihy, research professor at the University of New Orleans, predicts that the global climate will move toward theories that address social ills and foster healing on a global level.
